In half of a second, the guard standing on the president’s right fell backwards, as bloody chunks from his exit wound splattered on the stone columns behind. The other soldier fell on the president, shielding him with his body and Kevlar vest. Then they scrambled up and made for the armored humvee that shuttled the chief executive around Washington D.C. The radio reported that someone had attempted to kill the president, and Sliver defiantly reloaded the rifle, aimed, and fired again. As President Rome was getting into the humvee, the other bodyguard slammed involuntarily against the armor paneling and crumpled, leaving a trail of blood streaking down the door. The president dove in, slamming the door behind him as the tires screamed and smoked and frantically carried the vehicle down the road. The radio then reported that both of the president’s bodyguards had been shot, but that the executive himself had escaped unharmed.

“All that and you miss? I told you nobody can make that shot, and now you’re a dead man” Crow taunted from the floor.

“I didn’t miss” Sliver said, as he leaned down with his knife. Crow winced and flinched away, but Sliver only cut away the bindings on his limbs. “Get up.” Crow tentatively stood up as Sliver kept the knife on him. Then the agent brought the knife right up to Crow’s throat, holding the blade against his neck, and backed him to the northern wall.

“What the hell, man!?” Crow begged.

“I need you to do something for me” Sliver said.

“Yeah, fine, whatever!” Crow pleaded.

“Hold this” Sliver growled as he thrust the sniper rifle into Crow’s arms, and with a brutal kick slammed the man out of the window, careening towards the ground. Sliver turned and grasped the rope, crossing the observation room and glancing out the western window, where he could see nearby bystanders run towards the diversion he had just created. The radio reported that the shooter seemed to have committed suicide following his failed assassination attempt. Sliver then positioned himself on the southern window, facing towards the observation room, and rappelled quickly down the Monument’s southern face.

“Hey, who’s that?” some anonymous voice called out as Sliver hit the ground just outside his truck’s driver side door.

“Somebody stop him!” another voice yelled as Sliver unlocked the door and threw himself into the driver’s seat. He jammed the key into the ignition and started the automobile in a single motion, not bothering with a seatbelt, and peeled away just as the Washington citizens attempted to box him in. The truck tore across the grass and walkways, and Sliver checked the rearview mirror as he drove for the Potomac River. Two old police cars sped towards him at top speed off in the distance. He reached the tree line as his pursuers passed the base of the monument. Swerving and narrowly avoiding an arboreal demise, the agent then careened onto a small road with bystanders diving out of the truck’s unwavering path. The truck barreled on, with its pursuers gaining ground every second, and Sliver reached an intersection.
